Reader (for reading news, texts, books, imported content etc.)

Created by Meelis Ojasild, Modified on Thu, 20 Nov at 6:32 PM by Meelis Ojasild

Page View modes

The Reader has 3 different page view modes:

  1. Single Sentence view
    • Shows one sentence per page (unless the sentence doesn't fit)
  2. Sentence by Sentence view
    • The text is split into sentences and multiple sentences can be displayed on a single page
    • Each sentence has a quick translation button next to it
    • Best for reading news, texts etc that don't usually contain dialogue
  3. Full Text view
    • Shows paragraphs etc.
    • Best for books and anything containing dialogue - it might not be obvious otherwise to whom a given sentence (quote) belongs to if they'd get split up by sentences

Font size adjustments

You can adjust font size in the Reader settings.

What happens when re-reading the same page?

When reading the same page again while the article is open, it doesn't get counted towards words read. But it will count if you open the article the article another time.

Hidden features

  • When you skip a word (that you haven't seen before), it will be saved with the strength 5 (but without a translation) and is considered learned - it won't show up under the Vocabulary list
  • When you manually save a word for the first time, the word strength gets set to 0
  • When you skip a page that saved words with strength 0, the strength will be increased to 1 (if the word was last read more than 24 hours ago) - this accounts for improved recognition (passive recalling) of the word. It won't go over 1 unless you practice the words with flashcards for active recalling
  • Context (of up to 75 characters) is also saved when saving/updating a word - this can later be used in flashcards to display more context around the world

How to use quick lookup?

You can access the quick lookup setting from the top right corner of the reader. Instead of showing all possible translations, it shows the most likely translation as a tooltip for new words. You can the either open the translation panel for a deeper explanation or save it as a learning word.

What happens if I skip a page by accident?

It’s fine. You can go back to the previous page and still add the skipped words as learning words. It doesn’t matter if you add learning words from skipped or new words.

Why save words as learning words?

  • You will see your progress in terms of learning new words.
  • The translations load instantly.
  • Learning words are used both in the flashcards and the browser extension (for translating words on the pages you visit automatically).
  • You can later export those words.

Are there any shortcuts?

Yes, but only on touchscreens right now.
